Synopsis

"Her mom is dead.

Ghosts follow her around.

Her best friend is an elephant.

And she’s about to meet the biggest game changer of all: a boy. With a secret.

When circus-dwelling Gemma Flannery learns she will be attending public school for the first time in her seventeen years, little does she know that fitting in with her 12th-grade classmates will be the least of her concerns.
A pro at hiding her knack for seeing the dead (“shades”), Gemma is grieving the recent suicide of her mentally ill mother, a process eased by the introduction of her first real love interest, the charming and painfully handsome Henry Dmitri, who is harboring his own collection of dangerous secrets. Together, they will be presented with a frightening challenge: to assume their roles as heirs to a 3000-year-old magical text, the AVRAKEDAVRA, a book the über-rich, sleight-of-being master Lucian Dmitri would do anything to get his hands on. As each terrifying layer in her new reality melts away, Gemma unearths truths that her quiet, nomadic life with the Cinzio Traveling Players is not at all what she’d always cherished.

Gemma and Henry must rely on each other to stop Lucian’s diabolical plotting that will bring the world to its tired, scab-riddled knees, and are sent on the flight of their young lives, to save themselves, their families, and the world from the darkest kind of destruction." Goodreads

Amy's Adumbrations

I was persuaded into getting this by Cait at Cait Files. At first I found it difficult to get into as I'm not a massive fan of the fad with killing off of parents. However, once I started reading it I loved it. It's very witty and I adored Gemma. She is one of my favourite characters.

The storyline is very original, and I enjoyed the circus antics. Who wouldn't want to grow up in a travelling circus? Plus a pet elephant is definitely something I've wanted since watching Ong Bak. What I loved even more though were the Shades.

There is a fair bit of action and the story is fast paced, which had me whizzing through it.  Furthermore, Sleight has a bad guy who I loved to hate, Lucian. Always nice.

The love interest Henry is a tad weak though, and it all happened a little too easy for my tastes but still very sweet all the same.

I can't wait for the next installment in this series.

I give Sleight 4/5 milky way magic stars

  1. This sounds interesting. I'm in complete agreement with you on the current fad that suggests no protagonist is complete unless their parentals have been bumped off...

I'm also very jealous of the cover-model's hair :P

  3. Hi! I just found your blog through Megan's Fortnight of Guests! That was a really fun guest post by the way!

I remember this one being on your list for your Top Books. It sounds very interesting! Glad to hear that there's some action mixed in, and the circus aspect of it sounds so cool! I love the cover too :p Great review!

  4. Thanks for commenting :)

It is a really good book, you should definitely give it a whirl.

Also i wish i had her hair. I dyed mine red last year...like RED RED and it faded into a strange pinky yellow colour after a few weeks. Bad times.

  5. I'm curious about your use of the term "fad" because I've always thought of the absent parent as an overarching theme in YA fiction.

  6. Although it is a theme, it's taken on a new dimension recently. Seems to occur in every opening chapter of most of the books i've read recently.
