Hereafter
Tara Hudson
Synopsis
"Can there truly be love after death?
Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive. Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their new found happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever.
Thrilling and evocative, with moments of pure pleasure, Hereafter is a sensation you won't want to miss."

Amy's Adumbrations
Hereafter is a promising start to the series. I really enjoyed the story, and consider it nice eerie novel. I would suggest reading it on a dark night alone to add to the reading experience.
I found myself really feeling for the main character Amelia, and was waiting with bated breath through the entire book for her to find the truth out about herself. It was a great twist when she did. Definitely one of the main pros of this book. Many times books lead up to the big reveal and you feel hard done by. Not so with this one.
The Love Interest...I wasn't so much a fan of ol' Joshy Woshy I must say. It all seemed a little too soul mates STRIKE AGAIN, which sometimes works, but not in this book. I hope that gets wriggled about a bit in the next one. Although, that is just personal taste of course.
On the whole this is a new and interesting YA read, and I would recommend it to fans of Certain Slant of Light or even Fallen. If I had not recently read Divergent I would probably give this book a higher rating, but all books hence forth will have to step up their game if they intend to compete with a whole new level of brilliance.
So I give Hereafter three bags of milkyway magic stars
I have been thinking about reading this. After your review I think I'll give it a try! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI agree with your thoughts. It was a nice book but the romance didn't feel too true. I do the same after reading an exceptionally good book; everything else is rated lower.
ReplyDeleteGreat review Amy. I've heard mixed things about Hereafter, but I'm still keen to check it out for myself. I know what you mean by the "big reveal" being a letdown and I'm SO glad that wasn't the case here.

The Word Fiend
Great review! I haven't heard much about this book but it sounds interesting. I'll have to see if the library has it.
ReplyDeleteHey =] Thanks for commenting. It's a fairly decent read. Hope you enjoy it.
ReplyDelete@ P.E. I'm glad you felt the same way.

Lol, I know what you mean - after reading Divergent, everything pales in comparison! :P I do like the sound of this one though, so may still give it a try. Thanks for the review! :)
ReplyDelete@ Liz, definitely. I keep looking for things like Divergent but a lot of the same genre i'm not a massive fan of. Think Divergent has ruined me hehe.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
Excellent review! It's too bad you didn't like the story's love interest more. Since you only gave this book 3/5, it won't be at the very top of my TBR list.
