Divergent Review

Divergent
Veronica Roth
Published by Harper

Synopsis

"Beatrice "Tris" Prior has reached the fateful age of sixteen, the stage at which teenagers in Veronica Roth's dystopian Chicago must select which of five factions to join for life. Each faction represents a virtue: Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity, and Erudite. To the surprise of herself and her selfless Abnegation family, she chooses Dauntless, the path of courage. Her choice exposes her to the demanding, violent initiation rites of this group, but it also threatens to expose a personal secret that could place in mortal danger. Veronica Roth's young adult Divergent trilogy launches with a captivating adventure about love and loyalty playing out under most extreme circumstances." Goodreads

Amy's Adumbrations

Divergent...what can I say. Divergent surpassed my expectations. So much hype and I still came away thinking 'WOW', didn't think I'd like it this much. I haven't read all that many dystopian novels, but I think all the aspects of this are what you would claim make a good one. It's got the same kind of political basis that made 1984 as powerful as it was in it's day, and just the right amount of romance and heartbreak to keep you emotionally involved. This book grips you from the very first page right up until the end. I found myself googling when the sequel was going to be coming out as soon as I finished it, I can't wait for more of this series.I am finally going to read the Hunger Games while I wait.

Tris is such a strong and unselfish character, even though she doesn't see it that way. I really found myself impressed with how she just got on with things. Furthermore, I liked the fact that she wasn't some beautiful girl and the love interest wasn't constantly banging on about how beautiful her eyes or hair are. That can get tiresome. Four (the love interest) was brilliant. He was just the right amount of mysterious, quiet and abrupt.

Now on to the world Roth created...it was magnificent. Definitely on par with Cassandra Clare's world of shadow hunting. I adore the idea of a world where people are separated on the basis of their personality, and where people jump from moving trains and buildings as a part of their every day life.
I adored this book, and I think anyone would enjoy this. It really does have it all.

I give Divergent Five Bags of Giant buttons, my special rating for special books.
