Interview with Jennifer L. Armentrout (Half-Blood)

I was lucky enough to interview the lovely Jennifer Armentrout. I recently read Half-Blood and Daimon and have become a huge fan of the series. I cannot wait for Pure which is out next April.

Without further ado

Interview

What books would you say have influenced or inspired you to write?
In a very strange way, a book I absolutely loathed inspired me to start writing Half-Blood in 2008. I used to write when I was younger, while in high school and college, but stopped. This book got me back into writing since it was mostly like “put your money where your mouth is” sort of thing.

Do you have a favourite author?
I have several, but my all time favorite is LJ Smith. I grew up reading her books, as well as RL Stine, Christopher Pike, etc.

How did you come up with the idea of Daimon/Half Blood?
I wanted to use Greek Mythology since I’d always been a fan of it, especially the legends surrounding the demigod. So I took the myth of the demigod and expanded on it. Daimons just kind of came to me when I was hunting for a villain. But they aren’t the ‘big bad’ when you look at the overall series.

Alex is one of my favourite female characters as she’s quite a badass. Is she based on anyone?
Well, thank you! No one I know, which is probably a good thing. Alex is a bit wild.  If she was real, I’m not sure how long she’d last without ending up in jail.

I’m also a big Aiden fan, but who would you choose…Aiden or Seth? Or is that too difficult.
Wow. That’s difficult. Part of me would pick Aiden. He’s the kind of guy who would go to the ends of the earth for the girl he cared about. He also has this unwavering sense of patience and loyalty. And he has beautiful eyes. Then there is Seth, who is just a cocky, smart mouth. He’s fun, especially if you like the kind of boys that you know will get you into tons of trouble. And he’s wild, completely unpredictable. There’s something about that.

If they were to make Half-Blood in to a movie in the future who would you like to play Alex?
That is such a hard question. The only thing about an actress I’d like to see is that she weighs more than 120 pounds. Alex is tough. She also eats hamburgers and steaks. No teeny tiny actresses for her.

If you had the option to either become a half-blood or a pure which would you pick, and why?
I’d pick a pure-blood. They have a much easier life. Not sure what that says about me as a person….but they can also control the elements, so that’s pretty awesome.

I read on your blog that you like zombie movies. My favourite zombie movies are Braindead/ Evil Dead 2. What’s yours?
OMG, Evil Dead is hilariously bad in a good way. I like the old school zombie flicks like Night of the Living Dead, etc. Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland and Resident Evil flicks. I also love The Walking Dead series.

And there’s an impending zombie apocalypse, what’s your weapon of choice?
A shotgun with an endless supply of bullets.

Last but not least as I don’t want to take up too much of your time…how excited are you about the upcoming release of Half-Blood?
I’m super excited! Having a novel release is both thrilling and frightening, but I wouldn’t trade that feeling in for anything!

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Thanks for having me!

  5. Half-Blood is a story of Alex. She is a kick-arse kind of a girl with troubles following her everywhere she goes. She's been on the run for years with her mother, when daimons finally reach them, ripping her life even more apart. She is returned to Covenant for training, where she meets some interesting people while reconciling with old friends. Since she needs extra help for missing training so long, she trains with Aiden. And that's when the real fun begins.
